Summit Lightning Strike Highlights Need for Home Fire Preparedness
Last updated: September 24, 2026
Thunderstorms rolled through Summit, New Jersey, this week, bringing with them a dramatic display of nature's power and a concerning incident. According to reports from ABC7 New York, lightning struck a local home, igniting a fire in the attic. This event, while specific to Summit, underscores a critical message for all homeowners: the importance of proactive fire prevention and preparedness. When severe weather strikes, the risk of electrical damage and fires increases, making it essential to be ready. One practical step homeowners can take this week is to review their home's electrical system. While we can't control lightning, ensuring that surge protectors are in place for sensitive electronics and that your home's wiring is up to code can mitigate risks. Consider consulting with a qualified electrician to assess your system's current condition. Beyond electrical concerns, it's also a good time to check your smoke detectors. Are they functioning correctly? Test them regularly and replace batteries as needed. Having working smoke detectors is your first line of defense in alerting occupants to a fire, giving everyone precious time to escape. Furthermore, developing and practicing a family fire escape plan is invaluable. Identify two ways out of every room and establish a designated meeting spot outside the home. Practicing this plan, especially with children, can make a significant difference in a real emergency. This incident in Summit also brings to mind the importance of safeguarding your home's exterior, particularly the roof and chimney. Damage from storms can create vulnerabilities. For those in and around Denver, Colorado, considering a professional inspection of your chimney and roofing system this week could provide peace of mind and identify any potential issues before they escalate. We can help you arrange a free estimate with a licensed and insured chimney professional in your area.
